George Marshall was the son of Thomas Charles Walter and Isabella Marshall. He born in Belfast about 1895. The 1901 census records the family as living in Legane, Ballymagran, Tyrone. The family had moved from Belfast about 1900. George was 6 years old. The 1911 census shows the family still living at Legane, Ballymagran, Tyrone. George was 16 years old. He was one of twelve children. His father was a farmer. George Marshall enlisted in Caledon, County Tyrone. Private George Marshall was serving with the 9th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was killed in action at the Somme on 1st July 1916, age 21.
The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, next to the village of Thiepval, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929). Each year a major ceremony is held at the memorial on 1 July.
