George Marshall was born on 26th October 1894 in Belfast. He was one of twelve children. Around 1900 the family moved to Legane House, Legane, Dungannon where he was raised. George Marshall was the eldest son of Thomas Charles Walter and Isabella Marshall. Thomas Marshall and Isabella Caddoo were married on 2nd October 1890 in the district of Dungannon.

Private Marshall arrived in France with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on 5th October 1915.
1916
Private George Marshall was serving with the 9th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was killed in action on the fist day of the Battle of the Somme on Saturday 1st July 1916.

Private George Marshall, wounded, and missing, is the eldest son of Mr T C Marshall, vice-chairman of Dungannon Guardians.

Private George Marshall, Tyrone Volunteers, wounded and missing, is the eldest son of Mr T C W Marshall, Legane, deputy chairman of Dungannon Board of Guardians.

Intimation has been received that Private George Hamilton, Tyrone Volunteers, (eldest son of Mr T C Marshall, Legane), previously reported missing, has been killed in action.

It is understood that intimation has been received that Private George Hamilton (Tyrone Volunteers), eldest son of Mr T C W Marshall, Legane, (deputy vice-chairman of Dungannon Board of Guardians), who was previously reported missing, has been killed in action.
From the Mid Ulster Mail dated Saturday 2nd September 1916: Condolence
The Chairman referred to the death of Private George Marshall, Tyrone Volunteers, who had been killed in action at the front, and proposed that a vote of condolence with his father, Mr T C W Marshall, their deputy vice-chairman, be adopted and forwarded to him. All the Guardians deeply sympathised with Mr Marshall in his sad bereavement. Mr Bennett seconded the resolution, which was adopted in silence, the members standing.
1918
George’s brother Thomas also served. Lance Corporal Thomas Marshall, of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, became a prisoner of war and survived the war.

Lance Corporal Thomas Marshall, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (Lewis Gun Section), prisoner of war in Germany, is the younger son of Mr T C W Marshall, a rural district councillor, of Legane, Aughnacloy. His elder brother, George, was killed at the Somme on 1st July 1916.
Memorials
Private George Marshall has no known grave has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20th March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916.
Private George Marshall is commemorated locally on the WWI Roll of Honour plaque in Brantry Church of Ireland and also on Dungannon War Memorial.
