John McDonald was born about 1881 in Belfast or County Down.
John McDonald and Martha Johnston were married on 18th November 1903 in Belfast.
They went on to have at least five children, all girls born in Belfast, four surviving.
Family: John McDonald, Martha Amelia McDonald, Elizabeth M McDonald (born 22nd September 1904), Rebecca McDonald (born 20th August 1906), Jane McDonald (born 30th December 1908), Maria McDonald (born 8th March 1911), Emma McDonald (born 22nd March 1913).
The 1911 census lists John as age 33 living with his wife and family at house 59 in Asley Street, Belfast. He was a picture frame maker.

Lance Sergeant John McDonald was buried in Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast on 26th December 1918. The remainder of his family were latterly interred with him.
