Patrick O’Toole was the son of Joseph and Catherine Frances O'Toole. He was born in Hong Kong about 1891. By 1911 the family were living in Lisnamonaghan, Castlecaulfield. Patrick was working as a linen and cotton weaver. Private Patrick O’Toole arrived in France with the Northumberland Fusiliers on 25th December 1915. Private Patrick O’Toole was serving with the 13th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers when he was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in Saturday 1st July 1916.

The 1911 census lists Patrick as age 20, living with the family at house 13 in Lisnamonaghan, Castlecaulfield, County Tyrone. Patrick was working as a linen and cotton weaver.

Private Patrick O’Toole arrived in France with the Northumberland Fusiliers on 25th December 1915.

From the Tyrone Courier dated 24th August 1916:
The War Office intimate that Private Peter O'Toole, Northumberland Fusiliers, is missing. He is a brother of Mr Cathal O'Toole, a Dublin journalist, and his mother resides at Castlecaulfield. Private John O'Toole, another brother, volunteered into the same battalion.
From the Mid Ulster Mail dated Saturday 26th August 1916:
Private Peter O'Toole, Northumberland Fusiliers, is missing. He is a brother of Mr Cathal O'Toole, a well-known Dublin journalist, and had volunteered some time ago. his mother resides at Castlecaulfield and Private John O'Toole (another brother who volunteered into the same battalion) writes that his brother, Peter, is missing since 2nd July, and it is feared is killed in the trench, which he was occupying, was burst in by the German shell fire.
Patrick’s brother also died in the war. Private Thomas John O’Toole was serving with the 12th/13th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers when he died of disease on 11th November 1918.
On his brother’s grave in Mont Huon Military Cemetery in Le Treport. In France, the inscription reads: ALSO IN MEMORY OF HIS BROTHER PATRICK 13TH N. F. DIED AT SOMME 1ST JULY 1916. (R.I.P.)
Private Patrick O’Toole has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916.
