The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916. |

Patrick’s brother also died in the war. Private Thomas John O’Toole was serving with the 12th/13th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers when he died of disease on 11th November 1918. |

Private Peter O'Toole, Northumberland Fusiliers, is missing. He is a brother of Mr Cathal O'Toole, a well-known Dublin journalist, and had volunteered some time ago. his mother resides at Castlecaulfield and Private John O'Toole (another brother who volunteered into the same battalion) writes that his brother, Peter, is missing since 2nd July, and it is feared is killed in the trench, which he was occupying, was burst in by the German shell fire. |
