08/03/2021 The 1911 census lists Samuel as age 36 living at house 16.2 in Railway Road, Cavan Urban, Cavan. His occupation is given as ‘Cr Sergt 4/Roy Irish Fusiliers’. Interestingly, he is recorded as being married.
08/03/2021 From his enlistment papers, Samuel was born in Aughnacloy and enlisted at the age of 19 in November 1893. From this the following pre-enlistment details have been extracted.
08/03/2021 Samuel Fluke was born on 17th September 1874. His parents are unknown at this time. He was one of at least eight children.
08/03/2021 Known family: Thomas Fluke (born 26th December 1864), Robert Fluke (born 10th January 1867), William Fluke (born 10th April 1869), Jane Fluke (born 12th June 1871), Samuel Fluke (born 17th September 1874), John Fluke (born 2nd May 1877), Joseph Fluke (born 18th January 1880), David Fluke (born 16th February 1883).

08/03/2021 On 8th March 1901, from Lord Kitchener's despatch during the Boer War, the promotions of NCO's and men are listed. One of those mentioned was a Lance Corporal S Fluke of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, who was promoted Sergeant.
08/03/2021 Samuel was married and had at least one child, a daughter called Jane E D Fluke. We know this from a report from 1918 regarding entry to the Masonic Female Orphans School in Ballsbridge, Dublin, referring to a Jane E D Fluke, daughter of the late Bro. Samuel Fluke, Captain Royal Irish Rifles, Lodge 90, Cavan.
08/03/2021 Company Sergeant Major Samuel Fluke arrived with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in France on 5th October 1915.
08/03/2021 Captain Samuel Fluke was serving with the 11th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was killed in action on Thursday 16th August 1917.
08/03/2021 Temporary Lieutenant Samuel Fluke was posthumously Mentioned in Despatches on 14th December 1917 (tbc?).
08/03/2021 Captain Samuel Fluke has no known grave and is commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial near Ypres in Belgium.
