| Patrick Birney was born in Dungannon, Co Tyrone about 1877. The 1901 census lists Patrick Birney (Senior) as age 24 living with his family at house 73 in Lincoln Street, Falls Ward, Belfast. He was married to Mary Birney and Patrick was working as a tailor. By 1911, the family were living in Monaghan. Patrick Birney enlisted in Belfast where he was living at the time. Private Patrick Birney was serving with the 5th Battalion of the Connaught Rangers in Gallipoli when he contracted dysentery. he died of dysentery on 9th September 1915. He is buried in Weston Mill Cemetery in Plymouth, which suggests he was removed back to a hospital in England. He was 38 years old. Private Patrick Birney’s son, also Patrick Birney, fought and died in the war too. |

| Mrs Birney, Louisa Street, Belfast, has received intimation that her only son, Private Patrick Birney, Inniskillings, was killed in action on 30th January 1917. The deceased, who was only 18˝ years of age, entered the army as a boy three years ago from Linfield Foundry, where he had been an apprentice fitter. Mrs Birney lost her husband, Mr Patrick Birney, who died in September 1915, of dysentery contracted in Gallipoli. The deceased boy had been at the front since 1914, and had been once wounded. An officer, in the course of a sympathetic letter, to Mrs Birney says:- 'Your son did his duty to his God, his King and his country, and died while performing it.' The deceased Patrick Birney was a full cousin of Mr Hugh Birney, Ann Street, Dungannon, and was born in Coalisland and worked with his father Patrick at the tailoring trade until the death of his father, killed by the horse running away with the car on which he was going home from Dungannon to Coalisland; since then he resided in Belfast. His uncle John Birney, was killed during the Crimean War in the Balaclava charge, being in the Cavalry Light Brigade and one of 'Six Hundred'
