Ian Hamilton Lewis Black was the son of William James and Linda Jane Black of Otorohanga, Auckland, New Zealand. Ian was born about 1916. Ian Black was a school teacher before enlisting. He enlisted in Ngatea with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force and was sent to Tunisia. When enlisting, he named his wife, Iola Jessie Black as his next of kin. Private Ian Hamilton Lewis Black was serving with the 21st Infantry Battalion of the New Zealand Infantry when he was killed in action on 20 April 1943. He was 27 years old.
