Summary
Isaac Walker was the eldest son of James and Catherine Walker. He was born on 4th August 1890 in Clonmain, near Loughgall, County Armagh. He was the third of ten children. All but two were born in the Loughgall area. The family lived in Clonmain, Tullyroan, Armagh. Clonmain is about two miles south east of the Moy. Isaac worked in the local mill before enlisting in Dungannon. Sergeant Isaac Walker was serving with the 9th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was injured at the Battle of the Somme. Sergeant Walker was transferred to Bethnal Green Military Hospital in London where he died on 16th November 1916 as a result of his injuries.

Isaac Walker was the eldest son of James and Catherine Walker. James Walker and Catherine Morton were married on 19th May 1885 in the district of Armagh.
Isaac Walker was born on 4th August 1890 in Clonmain, near Charlemont, County Armagh. He was the third of ten children. all but two were born in the Charlemont area.
The 1901 census records Isaac as 11 years old. James Walker, Isaac’s father, worked as a general labourer. The family were living in Clonmain, Tullyroan, Armagh. Clonmain is about 2 miles south east of the Moy, in County Armagh.

The 1911 census shows the family and Isaac still living in Clonmain. Isaac was now 20 years old and along with some of the family, was working in the local mill. His father was a farm labourer.
Isaac Walker was a section leader of Summerisland Company of the U.V.F. He was also a member of Summerisland R.B.P. 319.
Prior to enlistment, Isaac worked for Messrs A Cowdy and Sons, Greenhall Mills, Loughgall.
Isaac Walker enlisted in Dungannon. He was the first in the district to join the colours.
Sergeant Isaac Walker arrived in France with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on 5th October 1915.
Sergeant Isaac Walker was serving with the 9th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was injured at the Battle of the Somme. He was shot 11 times and lay very seriously injured in a shell hole on the battlefield for three days and three nights until fellow soldiers rescued him.
Sergeant Walker was transferred to Bethnal Green Military Hospital in London where he died on 16th November 1916 as a result of his injuries.
Sergeant Walker’s remains were brought back from London to Belfast and then on to Loughgall.

Sergeant Isaac Walker, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Carson’s Terrace, Summerland, Loughgall, died of wounds.

Sergeant Isaac Walker, of the 9th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (tyrone Volunteers), who died in Bethnal Green Military Hospital on 16th November, of wounds received in action on the 1st July. The deceased, prior to enlistment, was in the employment of Messrs A Cowdy and Sons, Greenhall Mills, Loughgall, and was section leader of Summerisland Company of the U.V.F. he was also a member of Summerisland R.B.P. 319. It may be mentioned that he was the first in the district to join the colours, and his parents reside at Carson’s Terrace, Summerisland, Loughgall. His remains were brought back from London to Belfast on Saturday night and were interred in Loughgall cemetery. The funeral was a military one, and was largely attended. The deceased’s brother, Private J Walker, of the 9th, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, served in France for a considerable time and having been invalided home, is now located at Newtownards with the 10th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Sergeant Isaac Walker is buried in Loughgall Old Churchyard.
Sergeant Isaac Walker is commemorated locally on Moy War Memorial.
The Sgt Walker Memorial Pipe Band, from Summerisland in Loughgall, is named after Sergeant Isaac Walker.
