Walter Augustus Montgomery was the son of Thomas and Margaret Montgomery. Walter was born on 17th February 1899 in Moy, County Tyrone. The 1901 census shows Walter Augustus as age 2 living with the family at house 23 in Grange, Moy, Tyrone. By 1911, Walter’s mother Margaret had died. The family was now living in Farlough, Tullyniskane, Tyrone. Private (2nd Class) Walter Augustus Montgomery was serving with the Royal Air Force, 2nd Air Park when he died of disease near Boulogne in France on 23rd November 1918, age 19.

Walter Augustus Montgomery was the son of Thomas and Margaret Montgomery. Thomas Montgomery and Margaret Bryan on 1st July 1892 in the district of Dungannon.
Margaret’s maiden is variously spelt Bryan or Bryers.
Walter Montgomery was born on 17th February 1899 in Moy, County Tyrone. He was one of at least seven children, all born in the Moy area.
The 1901 census shows Walter Augustus as age 2 living with the family at house 23 in Grange, Moy, Tyrone. Thomas is working as a gardener.
Known Family: Thomas Montgomery, Margaret Montgomery, Thomas Montgomery (born 9th January 1893, died 2nd April 1895, age 2), John Jack William Montgomery (born 4th November 1894), Lillian Montgomery (born 16th October 1896), Walter Augustus Montgomery (born 17th February 1899), Charlotte Lola Montgomery (born 13th August 1901), Mary Montgomery (born 17th October 1903), Thomas Montgomery (born 30th July 1905).
Walter’s mother, Margaret Montgomery died on 6th August 1905 in the Moy area, aged 39. Walter would have been six years old.
The 1911 census records the family living in Farlough, Tullyniskane, Tyrone. Twelve year old Walter was still at school.
Walter Montgomery enlisted on 15th August 1918. He was 19 years old and had been working as a farm labourer. He gives his address as Beech Grove, Coalisland. Beechgrove House lay due west of Coalisland near Derryvale Woollen Mill.
Private (2nd Class) Walter Augustus Montgomery was serving with the Royal Air Force, 2nd Air Park when he died of disease near Boulogne in France on 23rd November 1918, age 19.
Private Walter Augustus Montgomery is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery. His inscription reads: HIS SUNNY SMILE IS BANISHED HIS STEP HATH PASSED AWAY
Terlincthun British Cemetery is situated on the northern outskirts of Boulogne. The first rest camps for Commonwealth forces were established near Terlincthun in August 1914 and during the whole of the First World War, Boulogne and Wimereux housed numerous hospitals and other medical establishments.
Private Walter Montgomery is commemorated locally on the Newmills Parish Church WWI Roll of Honour and on Newmills L.O.L. 183 Roll of Honour.
