George McCauley enlisted at Finner Camp, County Donegal.
1915
Private George McCauley arrived in France with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on 5th October 1915.
1916
From the Tyrone Courier dated 6 July 1916:
Mrs Samuel McCauley, Clare Terrace, Dungannon, received official intimation on Saturday that her son, Private George McCauley, Inniskillings (Ulster Division), has been wounded in action.
From the Mid Ulster Mail dated Saturday 8th July 1916:
Mrs Samuel McCauley, Clare Terrace, Dungannon, received official intimation on Saturday that her son, Private George McCauley, of the 9th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Division), has been wounded in action.
From the Tyrone Courier dated 20 July 1916:
Private George McCauley, son of Mr Samuel McCauley, has returned home to Dungannon, suffering from shrapnel wounds in his back and leg, received at the German third line on 1st July.
From the Mid Ulster Mail dated Saturday 22 July 1916:
Private George McCauley, Tyrone Volunteers, son of Mr Samuel McCauley, Beechvalley, Dungannon, has returned home suffering from shrapnel wounds in the back and leg received at the third line of German trenches on the afternoon of 1st July.
1917
Private George McCauley was served with “C Company” of the 9th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He died of wounds in Flanders on 17th August 1917. He was 20 years old.
Memorials
Private George McCauley is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. His inscription reads: GONE TO BE WITH THE LORD WHICH IS FAR BETTER
Private George McCauley is commemorated locally on Dungannon War Memorial.
