William Joseph Vance was the eldest son of Richard Thomas Vance and Jane ‘Jennie’ Vance. William was born about 1897 in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan. His father worked as a law clerk. Private William Joseph Vance was serving with the 699th Mechanised Transport Company in the Army Service Corps when he died on Wednesday 20th June 1917. He was 20 years old. 699 Company served in East Africa from 17 April 1916 until 1918. The 1901 census lists William as age 4 living with the family at house 42 in Main Street, Bailieborough, County Cavan. His father was a 'Land Agent Rest'.
The 1911 census lists William Joseph as age 14 living with the family at house 37 in Bailieborough Town, Cavan. William was still at school. His father worked as a law clerk.

The ASC Mechanical Transport Depot Companies filled a variety of administrative, recruitment, induction, training and re-supply roles. The Base Depots were based in the United Kingdom or at the port of entry to a theatre of war. Advanced Depots were located further up the lines of communication.
Private William Joseph Vance is buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery in Tanzania. His inscription reads: TRUER FAME CAN NO MAN WIN THAN IN A LIFE LAID NOBLY DOWN
