John McGinlay was the son of Hugh and Annie McGinlay. John was born about in 1899 in Greenock, Scotland.
Annie Shields is listed in the 1912 Belfast Street Directory, Fivemiletown section, as having refreshment rooms. There is no listing of her in the 1911 Irish census.
John McGinlay was living in Greenock when he enlisted at Stirling Castle.
Rifleman John McGinlay was serving with the 8th (City of London) Battalion (Post Office Rifles) of the London Regiment when he was killed in action in France & Flanders on 28th June 1918. He was 19 years old.
Rifleman John McGinlay is buried in Franvillers Communal Cemetery Extension, ten kilometres from Albert in France. His inscription reads: UNTIL THE DAY DAWNS R.I.P.
