Thomas McKeown was the second son of William and Isabella McKeown. He was born on 15th June 1891 in Garvaghey, Errigal, Ballygawley. He was one of eleven surviving children, all born in the Ballygawley area. Thomas worked on his father’s farm. Thomas McKeown enlisted in Omagh. Private Thomas McKeown was serving with the 11th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was killed in action in France on 16th August 1917. Thomas was 26 years old.

The 1901 census does not record Thomas as living with the family. His father was a farmer. The family lived in Garvaghey, Errigal, Tyrone.

The 1911 census lists the large family erroneously as the ‘Keown’ family. Thomas was now 20. He was working on his father’s farm.. The family still lived in Garvaghy, Errigal, Tyrone.
Thomas McKeown enlisted in Omagh.

Private W McKeown, Inniskillings, is reported slightly wounded. His mother is Mrs Bella McKeown, Garvaghy.
1917
Private Thomas McKeown was serving with the 11th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was killed in action in France on 16th August 1917.
Thomas’s younger brother, Robert McKeown, also died in the war. Robert died seven weeks earlier on 25th June 1917.

In his will, he left all to his father.

In the event of my death, I give the whole of my property and effects to Mr William McKeown, father, of Garvaghy, Ballygawley, County Tyrone. Private 29811. 12th Reserve Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. 28th May 1917.
