Summary      
Frederick John Duggan was the son of Elizabeth and Creighton Duggan. Frederick was born in 1883 in the Clones district, County Monaghan. His mother died when Fred was just six years old. Fred was educated at the Royal School Dungannon from 1896 to 1899. From school, Fred enlisted as an army cadet with the Royal Field Artillery at Woolwich in London. On 31st July 1902 Fred obtained a commission with the 103rd Battalion of the Royal Field Artillery. In 1905 he married Edith Emily Cogan. They had two sons, Terence and Michael. He was appointed Staff Captain in 1915. He was mentioned in dispatches. Captain Frederick John Duggan was serving with Royal Field Artillery when he was killed in action in France by a sniper while carrying out reconnaissance.

Frederick John Duggan was the son of Creighton and Elizabeth Duggan. Creighton Duggan and Elizabeth Adams were married in Cavan Presbyterian Church, Cavan in 1879.
Frederick was born in 1883 in the Clones district, County Monaghan.
Known family: Creighton Duggan (died 29th September 1921), Elizabeth Duggan (died 2nd February 1988), Jeannie Cranston Duggan (born 9th February 1880, Monaghan), Lillian May Duggan (born about 1882, Monaghan), Frederick John Duggan (born about 1883), Florence Josephine Duggan (born 6th March 1885), Creighton Edward Duggan (born 22nd June 1886).
Elizabeth Creighton died on 2nd February 1888, when Fred was just six years old.
Fred was educated at the Royal School Dungannon from 1896 to 1899.
From school, Fred enlisted as an army cadet with the Royal Field Artillery at Woolwich Arsenal in London.
The 1901 census does not list Fred as living with the family at house 1 in Scarvy, Newbliss, County Monaghan. The Duggans were a farming family.
On 31st July 1902 Fred obtained a commission with the 103rd Battalion of the Royal Field Artillery.
In 1905 he married Edith Emily Cogan. They had two sons, Terence Duggan and Michael Duggan.
The 1911 census does not list Fred as living with his father at house 41 in Fermanagh Street, Clones, County Monaghan. Creighton Duggan was now a wine merchant.
Captain Fred Duggan was involved in the war from the outset. He was appointed Staff Captain in 1915. He was mentioned in dispatches.

Captain Frederick John Duggan was serving with Royal Field Artillery when he was killed in action in France by a sniper while carrying out reconnaissance on enemy trenches on 21st March 1916. He was 33 years old.
From the Tyrone Courier dated 30 March 1916:
Captain Fred J Duggan, Royal Field Artillery, of Clones, reported killed, was educated at the Royal School Dungannon.

News was received in Clones yester morning of the death in action in France of Captain Fred J Duggan, Royal Field artillery, son of Mr Creighton Duggan, Clones. The sad message had been forwarded to the late Captain Duggan's widow, who resides in London, by his colonel, who in expressing deep regret at his death, said he was one of the very best, and loved by all the officers and men. Captain Duggan, who was in his 34th year, was educated at Dungannon Royal School and afterwards at Woolwich. He married, in 1905, Edith Emily, only daughter of the late Thomas Albert Bampfield Cogan, of Bristol, and leaves two sons. He had a younger brother in the Royal Engineers.
Captain Duggan is buried in Erquinghem-Lys Churchyard (Extension) in Nord, France.
Captain Fred Duggan is commemorated in St Tighernach’s Church Clones, and also on the family headstone in the adjoining graveyard.
Captain Fred Duggan is also commemorated in St Andrew’s Parish Church in Clevedon, Somerset, England.
